World Franchise Day: Why Franchising Continues to Change Lives

World Franchise Day: Why Franchising Continues to Change Lives

By Rachel Brooks, Managing Director, Swimtime UK, Board Member of the British Franchise Association (BFA), and Board Member of the European Franchise Federation (EFF)

On the 10th June, we celebrate World Franchise Day, a day that recognises one of the most powerful business models in the world and the thousands of people whose lives have been transformed through franchising.

Having spent more than 20 years working within franchising, I have witnessed first-hand the incredible opportunities that franchising can create. I have seen people leave employment to build successful businesses, families create generational wealth, communities benefit from local business ownership, and individuals discover confidence and capabilities they never knew they possessed.

As a Board Member of the British Franchise Association (BFA) and, more recently, a Board Member of the European Franchise Federation (EFF), I am passionate about promoting ethical franchising, high standards, and responsible business ownership.

World Franchise Day provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on what makes franchising such a powerful force for good.

Franchising Creates Real Business Ownership Opportunities

At its heart, franchising is about opportunity and people.

For many aspiring business owners, starting completely from scratch can be daunting. The risks are significant. There are systems to create, suppliers to source, customers to find, marketing strategies to develop, and countless lessons to learn along the way.

Franchising offers a different route.

It allows ambitious individuals to build and grow their own business while benefiting from an established brand, proven systems, training, support, and the experience of others who have already travelled the same path.

That support can significantly reduce many of the challenges typically associated with starting a business independently.

Importantly, franchisees are not buying a job. They are building an asset.

They are creating something that can grow in value, support their families, create employment opportunities, and often provide long-term financial security.

Over the years, I have seen countless examples of individuals who simply wanted a better future for themselves and their families and used franchising as the vehicle to achieve it.

The Importance of Ethical Franchising

Not all franchises are created equal.

One of the reasons I am proud to serve on both the BFA and EFF boards is the commitment both organisations have to promoting ethical franchising and maintaining high standards across the industry.

Ethical franchising is about much more than contracts and compliance.

It is about transparency. It is about treating franchisees fairly.

It is about ensuring prospective franchisees have access to the information they need to make informed decisions.

It is about providing genuine support, and it is about building long-term partnerships where both franchisor and franchisee can succeed together.

The BFA's Code of Ethics sets clear expectations around these principles and provides reassurance to prospective franchisees that accredited members are committed to operating responsibly.

For anyone considering franchising, I would always encourage them to seek out brands that embrace these standards and can demonstrate a genuine commitment to supporting their network.

A franchise relationship should be built on trust, collaboration, and shared success.

When those foundations exist, remarkable things can happen.

Watching People Grow is the Most Rewarding Part

One of the greatest privileges of working in franchising is watching people develop.

When individuals first join a franchise network, they often arrive with a mixture of excitement and apprehension.

Many have never run a business before.

Some have spent years in employment and are taking their first step into entrepreneurship.

Others are looking for a better work-life balance or greater control over their future.

What is fascinating is how quickly people begin to grow when they are given the right support, encouragement, and opportunities.

Over time, confidence increases.

Decision-making improves.

Leadership skills develop.

Business knowledge expands.

People begin to see themselves differently.

The business becomes more then a source of income - it becomes a catalyst for personal development.

At Swimtime, we have seen this transformation time and time again.

Real Stories from the Swimtime Network

Some of the most inspiring examples come from franchisees who joined us at a remarkably young age. Several individuals invested in their Swimtime franchise in their early twenties.

At an age when many people were still deciding their career path to pursue, they chose business ownership.

That decision has shaped the course of their lives.

Over the years, they have built successful businesses serving thousands of families within their local communities.

They have purchased their first homes.

They have got married.

They have started families.

They have enjoyed the flexibility to be present for important moments in their children's lives while continuing to build thriving businesses.

Perhaps most importantly, they have developed confidence, resilience, leadership skills, and commercial knowledge that extend far beyond swimming lessons.

Many openly acknowledge that the person they are today is very different from the person who first attended initial franchise training.

The growth has been extraordinary.

Not because success was handed to them, but because they were willing to learn, develop, and embrace the opportunities available within the franchise system.

These are the stories that rarely make headlines but perfectly illustrate the life changing potential of franchising.

Building Businesses That Make a Difference

Image

Franchisees do not just create opportunities for themselves.

They create opportunities for others.

Across the Swimtime network, franchisees employ teachers, administrators, customer service teams and managers.

They support local suppliers and venues.

They create career opportunities within their communities.

Most importantly, they help children develop a life-saving skill.

Every week, thousands of children attend Swimtime lessons across the UK. Many arrive nervous or lacking confidence in the water.

Through the dedication of our franchisees and their teams, those children develop skills that can have a lifelong impact.

The social value created by franchise businesses is often overlooked.

Yet across countless sectors, franchisees play a vital role in supporting local economics and strengthening communities,

World Franchise Day is an opportunity to recognise this contribution.

The Power of Collective Knowledge

One of the greatest strengths of franchising is that no one is expected to figure everything out alone.

When you join a strong franchise network, you gain access to years, sometimes decades, of experience.

At Swimtime, we are fortunate to have franchisees who have been part of our network since 1998.

Think about that for a moment.

Nearly three decades of operational experience.

Nearly three decades of customer insight.

Nearly three decades of learning what works and what doesn't.

That knowledge is invaluable.

What makes our network particularly special is the willingness of franchisees to share their experiences with one another.

When someone encounters a challenge, there is almost always another franchisee who has faced something similar before.

When someone discovers a new way of improving customer retention, increasing occupancy, or developing their team, those insights are often shared across the network.

The culture of collaboration accelerates learning. It helps new franchisees avoid common mistakes.

It enables experienced franchisees to continue improving.

And it creates a support system that simply would not exist if everyone were operating independently.

People often focus on the systems, processes, and brand when evaluating a franchise opportunity.

Those things matter.

But the collective knowledge within a mature franchise network can be equally valuable.

Support Matters

The reality is that every business owner faces challenges.

Economic conditions change. Consumer behaviour evolves. Unexpected obstacles arise.

What often separates successful franchise businesses from struggling independent businesses is the quality of support available when those challenges occur.

At Swimtime, support comes in many forms:

  • Training.
  • Business coaching.
  • Operational guidance.
  • Marketing expertise.
  • Technology platforms.
  • Peer-to-peer learning.
  • Network events.
  • Regular reviews.
  • Strategic planning.

The goal is not simply to help franchisees survive. It is to help them thrive.

Successful franchisors understand that their success is directly linked to the success of their franchisees.

That alignment creates a powerful partnership.

The best franchise relationships are built on mutual commitment and shared ambition.

Why Franchising Remains Relevant Today

  • The business landscape continues to evolve rapidly.
  • Technology is transforming customer expectations.
  • Economic uncertainty remains a reality.
  • Artificial intelligence is changing the way businesses operate.

Despite these changes, the fundamental appeal of franchising remains remarkably strong.

  • People still aspire to own their own business.
  • They still want greater control over their future.
  • They still value proven systems and experienced support.
  • They still benefit from being part of a community of like-minded business owners.

In many ways, these advantages are becoming even more important.

The pace of change means that learning from others and accessing proven expertise can provide a significant competitive advantage.

Strong franchise systems help business owners adapt more quickly and respond more effectively to changing market conditions.

Franchising Is More Than a Business Model - It Is a Major Economic Force

Sometimes franchising is viewed simply as a route into business ownership. In reality, it is one of the most significant and resilient sectors of the UK economy.

According to the latest British Franchise Association (BFA) research, the UK franchise sector now contributes £19.1 billion to the UK economy, supports more than 50,000 franchise units and provides employment for over 770,000 people. The average turnover per franchise unit is now approximately £400,000.

These figures demonstrate that franchising is not a niche business model. It is a major contributor to UK economic growth, job creation and entrepreneurship.

What is particularly impressive is the resilience of the sector.

Recent BFA research revealed that 89% of franchise units report profitability, while some reports place franchise success rates as high as 99.5%, significantly outperforming many independent start-up businesses.

That does not mean franchising is easy. Success still requires commitment, hard work and determination. However, it does demonstrate the value of proven systems, established brands and ongoing support structures.

For many aspiring entrepreneurs, that support can be the difference between surviving and thriving.

Why Lenders & Investors Often Like Franchising

One of the advantages often overlooked by prospective franchisees is that many established franchise brands are viewed positively by lenders.

Banks and funding providers understand the strength of proven franchise systems. They can see the historical performance data, operational processes and support mechanisms that sit behind established brands.

This is one of the reasons why major financial institutions continue to invest heavily in the franchise sector and maintain dedicated franchise teams.

For aspiring business owners, this can make access to funding more achievable than it may be for a completely independent start-up with no trading history, no established systems, and no recognised brand.

The ability to invest in a business with a proven track record often gives both lenders and franchisees greater confidence.

When combined with the training, mentoring, and support available within strong franchise networks, franchising becomes an attractive proposition for individuals who want to take control of their future whilst reducing some of the risk associated with starting alone.

An Investment in More Than Financial Return

Of course, the true value of franchising cannot always be measured in turnover figures and economic contribution alone.

The return on investment is often much broader.

It is the confidence gained by someone who never believed they could run a business.

It is the flexibility to attend a school assembly, sports day or parents' evening.

It is the opportunity to build an asset that creates long-term security for a family.

It is the chance to become part of a network where people genuinely want to see one another succeed.

Across the Swimtime network, we have seen franchisees achieve all of these things.

For many, their franchise has not simply changed their career. It has changed the trajectory of their life.

Looking Ahead

As I look towards the future of franchising, I am incredibly optimistic.

The sector continues to innovate. Franchise systems continue to evolve. New opportunities continue to emerge.

At the same time, the principles that underpin successful franchising remain unchanged.

  • Trust.
  • Partnership.
  • Collaboration.
  • Support.
  • Shared success.

These values have driven franchising's growth for decades and will continue to shape its future.

At Swimtime, we remain committed to helping more people achieve their ambitions through business ownership while continuing to deliver life-changing swimming lessons to families across the UK.

We are proud of the achievements of our franchisees.

We are proud of the communities they serve.

And we are proud to be part of a wider franchising community that creates opportunities for thousands of people every year.

Celebrating World Franchise Day

World Franchise Day is ultimately a celebration of people.

The people who take the leap into business ownership.

The people who support and mentor others.

The people who create jobs and opportunities.

The people who build businesses that make a difference in their communities.

And the people who demonstrate everyday, that with the right support, ambition, and determination, extraordinary things are possible. After more than 20 years in franchising, I remain as passionate about the sector today as I was when I first joined it.

Because at it's very best, franchising changes lives.

Not just financially.

But personally, professionally, and for generations to come.

That is something truly worth celebrating.

Happy World Franchise Day.
